What is the future of electric bicycles in 2023?

Release Time:2023-10-18

Although the European Union imposed temporary tariffs on Chinese electric bicycle exports two years ago, any electric bicycle exported from China will face tariffs of no more than 37%. The US government also approved a 25% tariff on Chinese electric bicycles in 2018. The tariffs on two wheel electric vehicles in Southeast Asia are generally high, with import tariffs in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines reaching as high as 50%, 45%, and 30%, respectively.

However, in 2020, both of these major issues underwent significant improvements. Firstly, tariffs on electric bicycles in Southeast Asia will decrease.

According to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) signed on November 15th, Indonesia and Vietnam will lower tariffs on Chinese exports of two wheeled vehicles. The tariff on motorcycles exported to Indonesia will be reduced to zero next year, while some will be reduced to zero at a constant rate within 15 years. The majority of tariffs on motorcycles exported to Vietnam will be reduced to zero at a constant rate within 20 years. Note that this is for "two wheeled vehicles", and electric motorcycles and electric bicycles are also included. The reduction of tariffs will directly promote domestic manufacturers to respond to the demand of the Southeast Asian market and benefit relevant manufacturers in going overseas. Secondly, the epidemic has changed the way people in Europe and America travel and has also awakened related needs.

And European countries are gradually "unblocking" the epidemic, and governments are also encouraging bicycle travel. About a dozen countries and regions, including France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and Belgium, have launched subsidy programs. For example, Italy has a maximum of 500 euros, France has 400 euros, and the Netherlands provides subsidies of over 30%. AliExpress, a subsidiary of Alibaba, showed that bicycle sales in the Spanish market increased by over 22 times year-on-year in May, Italy by nearly 9 times, the UK by 8 times, France by 3.8 times, Spain by 2.8 times, Russia by 60 times, and the United States by three times. All countries are in short supply.

According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the foreign market has become a major driving force for the significant increase in the production and sales of electric bicycles in China in 2023. From January to October, the export volume of electric motorcycles and bicycles reached 13.82 million units, a year-on-year increase of 41.7%. With the promotion of RCEP and the normalization of the epidemic, electric bicycle manufacturers are bound to have greater prospects on their way to sea. The demand is still in the sprint stage, and the future prospects are infinite.
